ISSUE

Establishment of genealogy & family history as an accredited course in high school & colleges.

POSITION

Support

Genealogy is one of the foundation stones of the Kentucky Historical Society. The study of family history teaches skills well beyond the fundamental factual information, and creates societal benefits Genealogy has eclipsed history as a popular recreation.

Among the fundamental skills genealogy teaches are the ability to research, to determine fact, to compile data, to argue falsehood, to assert a reasonable conclusion, and to present information - all valuable life skills applicable to any occupation.

Additionally, the study of family history provides societal benefits. It engenders a sense of community, one’s place in community, and the sense of belonging that eclipses the isolation long associated with many societal ills.

Concerned Members support the institution of genealogy and family history as accredited courses at the high school and college levels in recognition of the skills they teach and benefits they enure to society as a whole.
