Dedicated member on KHS board of directors & dedicated public representation.
POSITION
Support
Currently members of the Kentucky Historical Society may only participate in one meeting per year of the Board of Directors,
at the annual meeting in October. This rule, contained in the by-laws, not only restricts member participation, it deprives
the board of invaluable intercourse its members whom the Society is bound to serve. Adjusting the by-laws to conform with
the Open Meeting Act will assure members participation in all meetings of the board of directors in which the business of
the Kentucky Historical Society is conducted.
Additionally, directors are supposed to represent the interests of members. Yet most directors are nominated and elected
for specific skills (eg. legal, fund raising, etc.), which have nothing to do with representing the interests of members.
The dedication of a public member for the board of directors, intended to represent member and public interest, would assure
a fair hearing for interest of members and the public at large.
Concerned Members support conformity of the by-laws with the Open Meeting Act, as well as dedicating one director to represent
solely the interests of the members.
